Hey friends!
We’re officially in Month 5 of our Temperature-Sampler Blanket CAL and I’m so excited to introduce our May Stitch of the Month: the Alternate Spike Stitch! 🎉
This one is new to me, but once I worked it up and saw the beautiful, textured rows it created, I instantly knew—it deserves its own full project someday. This stitch is rhythmic, beginner-friendly, and adds the perfect amount of pop without being fussy. If you’ve stuck with this project since January, I just want to say: you are doing AMAZING. 👏👏👏
💕 4 Reasons You'll Love the Alternate Spike Stitch

One-row repeat – super easy to remember and perfect for daily stitching.
Visually interesting – it gives your rows a gorgeous zig-zag texture.
Great for mindfulness – the stitch has a calming rhythm once you get going.
Beginner-friendly – nothing tricky here, just single crochet with a fun twist.
It’s stretchy and forgiving – which is especially helpful in a year-long project!
✨ Loose Tension = Happy Blanket
Okay this part is super important…Please make sure you’re using loose tension as you work this and every other stitch in the CAL.
We’ll be blocking and stretching the sides of the blanket before we add our border at the end of the year. Keeping your stitches relaxed helps everything line up beautifully—so we finish strong with clean edges and smooth sides.
💡 Not Feeling a Stitch? You Can Swap It!
I know some of you felt a little stuck with April’s Bobble Column Stitch—and I totally get it!
Here’s the thing: I want you to enjoy this project. If a certain stitch isn’t your favorite, you can absolutely substitute it out.
Choose any stitch you like that:
Has a 1:1 stitch ratio (so you keep those 212 stitches per row)
Belongs to the single crochet family (this helps regulate the length over time)
You’re in charge of your blanket. Make it something you love working on. 💖
