If you're looking for the perfect lightweight crochet project for summer, this Beachy Lacy Hexagon Coverup might be exactly what you're looking for.

This breezy crochet top is made using simple lacy hexagon motifs joined together to create an oversized, comfortable coverup that's perfect for the beach, pool, lake days, vacations, festivals, or simply layering over your favorite tank top.

What I love most about this design is that it looks far more complicated than it actually is. Once you've learned how to crochet the Full Lacy Hexagon and Half Lacy Hexagon motifs, the rest is simply joining the pieces together and adding a few simple borders.

Whether you're making this as a swimsuit coverup, summer top, or lightweight layering piece, I hope you enjoy creating it as much as I enjoyed designing it.

How To Assemble The Beachy Lacy Hexagon Coverup

Once all of your motifs have been completed, it's time to assemble the garment.

I used a Slip Stitch Back Loop Only join to connect all motifs together.

Layout Diagram

Motif Requirements

  • 70 Full Lacy Hexagons

  • 12 Half Lacy Hexagons

Layout

Rows 1–5:

  • Row 1: 7 Full Hexagons

  • Row 2: 6 Full Hexagons + 2 Half Hexagons

  • Repeat for a total of 5 rows

Row 6:

  • Create the neckline opening

Rows 7–11:

  • Repeat Rows 1–5

Joining The Sides

Once your rectangle is complete:

  1. Fold the rectangle in half.

  2. Align the motifs.

  3. Measure 8.5 inches down from the shoulder fold.

  4. Use stitch markers to mark the arm opening.

  5. Seam the sides using the Mattress Stitch Join.

Collar Border

For the borders I just used a sc.

Sl st into any valley in the collar section.  Ch 1, sc in the same st you sl st’d into.

Make one sc in each st.

At the peak ch-3 you will sc in the first ch, make 3 sc in the second ch, and one sc in the third ch.

Continue to make one sc in each st down the other side.

In the valley section you will make a sc2tog pulling a loop from the sts on each side of that join.

Working your way up the side of the half hexagon, you will make 3 sc around the post of each tr.  Make one sc in the middle of the half hexagon.

Then continue to make 3 sc around the post of each tr.

Repeat all the way around your collar.

Once you make it all the way around, sc2tog pulling a loop from the sts on each side of that join.

End the border by sl st’ing into the first sc you made.  Fasten off your work and weave in your ends.

Sleeve Border

We will also be using the sc border for the arm hole.

Sl st around the tr at the bottom of the arm hole.  Ch 1, make 3 sc around the post of that tr.

Continue to make 3 sc around the post of each tr you are working into.

Make one sc into the top of any st you come across.

Repeat all the way around.

End border by sl st’ing into the top of the first sc.  Fasten off your work and weave in your ends.

Bottom Hem Border

Also using the sc border.

Rnd 1:  Sl st into the valley of any 2 hexagons, find the st right before you leap over the join to sl st into.

Then ch 1.

sc2tog by pulling up a loop from the sts on each side of the join.

Make one sc in each st in each st to ch-3.

Make one sc in the first ch, 3 sc in the second ch, and one sc in the third ch.

Make one sc in each st down the other side.

In the valley between the next 2 hexagons, make a sc2tog pulling up a loop from the sts on each side of the join.

Repeat all the way around the hem.

Once you make your way all the way around, sl st into the top of the first sc2tog to close the round.

Rnd 2:  ch 1, sc2tog the first 2 sts together.

Make one sc in each st leading up to the next point where there are 3 sc.

Make one sc in the first st, make 3 sc in the second st, make one sc in the third st.

Continue to make one sc in each st along the next side.

In each valley, make a sc3tog by pulling a loop from the st to one side of the bottom st, pulling a loop from the bottom st, and pulling a loop from the st on the other side of the bottom st.

This will make the valley more pointed and defined.

Repeat all the way around the bottom hem for rnd 2.

End the round by pulling up a loop from the st just before the first sc2tog, then pull a loop from the top of the first sc2tog, yarn over and pull through all loops.

Fasten off your work and weave in your ends.

Project Is Complete!

I hope you love it!
