Have you ever followed a crochet pattern exactly as written, only to find that it just doesn’t fit quite right?
🙋♀️Maybe the body feels too boxy, the armholes feel snug, or you want a bit more personality in the neckline.
Good news: you don’t have to settle! In this post (and the video below), I’m walking you through easy modifications you can make to your granny square top—or really, any crochet top—to help it fit YOU better.
👇 Watch the full video here:
✂️ Easy Crochet Top Modifications Covered in the Video:
1. Make It Looser (Without Making It Longer)
Want more wiggle room around the bust or belly without turning your top into a tunic?
➡️ Try adding a few rows of double crochet to the right and left sides of your granny square. Just be sure to keep both sides even for symmetry!
2. Adjust the Armhole Fit
If sleeves feel tight or you want extra room, add one or two rows to the side edges of the square around where the armhole will be. It’s a tiny change that makes a big difference in comfort.
3. Change the Length
Crop it short, wear it long—totally your call! You can shorten your top by stopping early or lengthen it with a bottom row of squares or a future border (hint: we’ll talk about those in the joining video!).
4. Explore New Neckline Shapes
Boatneck isn’t the only option. Try a:
Scoop neck
V-neck (like the one I did in my Simple Lush Tank Top)
Off-the-shoulder style
With a little intentional seaming (a fancy way of saying “skip some joins on purpose”), you can totally reshape your neckline without math or stress.
5. Add Personality with Style Elements
Want to take your top to the next level?Add:
Fringe to the bottom edge for a boho look
Statement buttons at the neckline or shoulders
Color blocking by using different shades for front/back or sleeves
Small changes = BIG custom vibes.
📝 Use the Modifications Worksheet!

Be sure to grab your Worksheet from the resource section.
It includes:
A top sketch for doodling your ideas
A notes box just for your custom changes
A space to track what worked (and what didn’t) in case you want to make another later
Seriously, this one’s a lifesaver when your brain forgets what you did three rows ago 😂
💬 Final Thoughts
Remember—you are the boss of your yarn. You don’t need permission to make a pattern fit you better, feel better, or look more like your style. That’s the beauty of handmade.
And if you’re nervous to try modifying? That’s okay. Just experiment. If it doesn’t work out, it’s just yarn. You can always frog it and try again. ❤️
